The historical information appearing on this Web site is not based on original research, but drawn from published sources.
Experts sometimes disagree, and an attempt has been made to steer a neutral course in such cases, except where incontrovertible evidence is at hand. Having said that, the webmaster, not his sources, is to blame for any errors of fact, lapses in judgement, unsupported conclusions, or dangling participles.
The main sources are listed below, alphabetically by author, and followed by links to interesting Web sites relating to ceramic arts and crafts.

Such is the art of the potter: a craft that is difficult and disappointing perhaps beyond all others, for most craftsmen, when they have finished their work, can stand back and approve of it or not as it strikes them in the finished state. But not so the potter. When all is complete he has yet to submit his work to the mercy of the fire that no man can completely control, and this element will make or mar all his effort.
