Mashman Brothers’ pottery of Sydney—founded 1885 by potters trained at England’s Doulton Pottery, and long-recognised as one of Australia’s most distinguished manufacturers—started producing Regal Art Ware in 1932. The glazes, mostly in rich but subdued colours, were especially smooth and glassy. Although the colours are generally streaked and mottled, giving the appearance of casual application, in fact the effects were very skilfully controlled, often with subtle repeating patterns discernable under close examination.
All the pieces collected here (along with scores of others) appeared in a 1933 company catalogue, reproduced in Geoff Ford’s Australian Pottery: The First 100 Years. The astonishing range of shapes and glazes in their repertoire is proof of the great skill, imagination, and—especially in the case of Mashman—fine aesthetic sensibility available to Australian commercial potteries during those years.
