Cornwell’s Brunswick Potteries (founded in 1860) was a major Melbourne producer of industrial and domestic clay products for many years. Although decorative pottery was nothing new to Cornwell’s, like the other potteries represented in this collection they produced a distinctive line of artware in the 1930s.
Typical Cornwell artwares of the time had bold diagonal stripes, creating the illusion of a spiral surrounding the body, using yellow, blue, pink and light green glazes.

At left are two such pieces. Vases similar to the top one were sometimes drilled, wired and sold as lamp bases by Melbourne department stores.
The Cornwell milk jug, with chocolate brown above a creamy semi-gloss  body, was probably sold as part of a tea service.
